A collection of interdisciplinary programs and projects inspired by the themes of geography, politics, and location presented in the exhibition State of the Art: Locate. All five participating professors and their students presented their projects at the Art Museum of South Texas (AMST) on May 3, 2022. This free public event allowed the students an opportunity to share their work with important downtown stakeholders and the museum audience. On May 6, 2022, many of these same professors and students presented their work again at the downtown ArtWalk.

Creative Mapping

The posters below serve as documents and maps of downtown Corpus Christi, and continue to be distributed through the AMST gift shop and at downtown ArtWalks. Collaged photos from the students in Dr. Pattison’s class create the backgrounds and the illustrations and coordinates point viewers to specific areas of interest in Corpus Christi. The video below explains the concept of a dérive and shows the downtown walks that inspired this collaboration to promote and respond to the exhibition State of the Art: Locate.

Highlighting DownTown Stakeholders

The videos below show the feel of exploring downtown Corpus Christi with two local business owners, Ema and Monica. In addition to their stores, they both engage the local art community with regular pop-up events that feature music, art vendors, and various other local creatives. The resulting videos expand on the creative themes of the dérive and promoted the exhibition State of the Art: Locate.

Engaging Activist Artists

Matt Garza
Haus of Glitter: Artistic Director + Community Partnerships

Anthony “AM” Andrade, Jr.
Haus of Glitter: Director of Digital Media + Record Label + Liberation Garden

Artists from the Haus of Glitter Dance Company, presented their work and led an activity at AMST’s free community night on May 19, 2022. The art activity engaged museum visitors to examine the way personal identity informs their relationship to location. Two posters posed the questions “What does it mean to be American?” and “What does it mean to be Texan?” - participants then wrote and drew responses within the corresponding geographic boundaries. As a Corpus Christi native, now living in Providence, Rhode Island, Matt Garza made meaningful connections with his hometown community through the program. The Haus of Glitter’s projects focus on themes of diversity and representation, historical intervention, and community oriented social practice.
