Edward Steichen

Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was not only a noted photographer, but director of the Museum of Modern Art’s Department of Photography from 1947-1961. One of Steichen’s most significant shows as curator was The Family of Man, which brought together hundreds of images from photographers working around the world. The aim of the project, as Steichen described it, was to capture “the gamut of life from birth to death.” You can travel back in time to 1955 and see 90 images of that installation, here.
