Aaron Siskind
Aaron Siskind (1903-1991) was known for photographs as flat surfaces, emphasizing details and creating a new image rather than a representation of the original subject. The resulting tendency toward abstraction aligned him with the work of contemporary painters (and friends), who would become known as the “New York School” of postwar artists. You can see many more of his photos, here.

Siskind was both a member of the “New York School” and a documentarian of it. In 1951, The Ninth Street Show marked the debut of Abstract Expressionism and established New York as the global capital of the art world. See images of artwork from that show, as well as one of Siskind’s photographs of it, here.
