ENGLISH

Spanish Colonial Silver

The Spanish took a serious interest in the precious metals found in the New World as they encountered the indigenous cultures that had created beautiful works in gold and silver. Mines and workshops were set up throughout the Americas. As with other art forms, they blended the silver working traditions brought from Spain with those of the indigenous cultures.

The Catholic Church highlighted its majesty and power through the use of silver pieces created for the various liturgical services. These objects included altar pieces, incensarios, baptismal items, candlesticks, and monstrances. As you examine the pieces on display, consider how many are still in use during church services today.
